by katrinac on 15/11/2016 , No comments

Due to the large number of calls being received by the Ministry of Education, NZSTA has been asked to send out a request that all schools update their website to reflect whether they are open or closed due to the recent earthquakes.

Glendowie School will remain open during this time.  Classes, trips and assessments will continue as planned.

Year 4’s – An Inquiry Into Our Family’s Heritage

by katrinac on 02/06/2016 , No comments

In Term 1, the Year 4’s were inquiring into their family histories, and treasures for their Where We Are in Place and Time unit. They learnt about their family heirlooms. They then made their work into mini presentations to share in an exhibition for their parents, teachers and peers.

This group of learners also went in a school trip to Highwic House. They made butter and learnt all about the family that lived in the splendid house.

The year 4’s had an amazing assembly and they had to do a lot of work to understand everything behind their family’s heritage.

Check out some of the action from their unit in the video below.

Here is the Media Twins who will be bringing you some Year 4 news this year.

Year 3 Assembly 2016

by katrinac on 02/06/2016 , No comments
In Term 1, the Year 3’s were learning about special places in their Where We Are in Place and Time unit. They went on a trip to a local marae to learn about Maori culture.
They shared some of their learning with the school through their assembly.  It was full of fun songs, sharing their special places and their learning.
We went along to go behind the scenes and videoed some of their rehearsals.  Check it out below.

Here is our team working with the Year 3’s this year.

What Happened To Our Furniture?!?!

by katrinac on 09/05/2016 , No comments

The Year 6’s have been looking into their unit ‘How We Organise Ourselves’.

They have been introduced to negotiation when their furniture was mysteriously mucked about. How was it mucked about? Well, the teachers got some help from some of our Year 8’s and they took furniture from the classes and moved them into other classes.

When the students realised, the classes started arguing with each other. The children would negotiate for the best deal and not just be nice when swapping the furniture back. Each class believed it was the other classes’ fault so they wanted the best deal possible.

We interviewed a few students just after this happened to see what they thought of it all and what they learnt.

Check out the interviews here:

Look what we spied at lunchtime today

by katrinac on 09/05/2016 , No comments

As some of the teachers were sitting in the staffroom at lunchtime today, we were entertained by a large group of our students from a variety of year levels all playing together.

It was great to see so I just had to get my phone out to capture the moment…

Well done to the Year 7 girls who started it up – it ended up being fun for a lot of students.

Our School App is here!

FB_post

Our new school app is finally here.

This week sees the launch of our Glendowie School App.  This mobile app is for our parent community to receive notices, events and other important school messages.  It does not replace our website but instead complements it.

Our school app has direct easy access to upcoming events, the latest newsletters, links including our website and tuckshop items.  Within the app you can notify us of your student’s absenteeism by filling out the form within the app.  Most importantly, you are invited to subscribe to class and sport notifications.  To access your Alert Subscriptions, select the “Menu” drop down, Alert Subscriptions, click on Sport or Classrooms and select the appropriate radio buttons.  Ensure you have allowed push notifications for this app for this important feature to work.  You will be directed through this process at initial launch.

Glendowie School proposes to use push notifications as reminders of important events such as a class trip or cancellation of a sporting event.  With the subscription feature, you will not need to receive every message we push out.  They will be tailored to meet your needs and therefore you will not be inundated with irrelevant notifications.

At this stage, the free app is available on iPhone and Android.  SchoolApps is developing a Windows version which should be available later this year.

To access the app, scan the QR Code, follow this link http://is.gd/YR43tJ or search for Glendowie School in The App or Android stores.

Movie Night

by katrinac on 17/08/2015 , No comments

Last term we had our much anticipated Movie Night! Our wonderful Parents Association work hard to bring us this event each year. There is a lot of work in setting it up, running it and packing up at the end and we appreciate their hard work. We had a Junior Movie followed by a Senior Movie – some chose to go to both.

William, Tim and Michael caught a bit of the action – check it out!

Don’t forget the next PA event this term – the DISCO! We can’t wait!
